Anatomy of a deck

Six layers. Zero shortcuts.

A great deck isn't just the surface you walk on — it's six engineered layers working together. Here's how we build from the ground up.

3D exploded isometric diagram showing deck construction layers from bottom to top: concrete piers, vertical posts, horizontal beams spanning across posts, joists sitting perpendicular on top of beams, deck boards, and cable railing system

Exploded view: piers → posts → beams → joists (perpendicular, sitting on top of beams) → deck boards → railing

1

Piers

Concrete footings anchored deep into stable soil or bedrock. They're the foundation — every pound of load transfers through these first.

Typically 12–24" diameter, poured to code depth
2

Posts

Vertical columns rising from each pier. On hillside builds, we use steel columns rated for seismic and lateral loads.

4×4 wood or steel tube depending on height
3

Beams

Heavy horizontal members that span across the tops of posts. They form the primary structural grid and carry all the weight above.

Run left-to-right across post tops
4

Joists

Closely spaced framing members that sit on top of the beams, running perpendicular to them. They directly support the deck surface.

Typically 16" on center, perpendicular to beams
5

Deck Boards

The walking surface — composite or hardwood. Fastened to joists with hidden clips for a clean, screw-free finish that ages beautifully.

Composite, PVC, or premium hardwood options
6

Railing

Safety meets style. We use cable rail, metal, or glass systems chosen to maximize your view while meeting code requirements.

Cable, metal, or glass — 36–42" height to code
